Whether it was the best movie of the year is up for debate, but that does not mean The French Connection is a bad film. In fact, it is a superb film. It is very well made, it has a hard edge, is well directed, has a fine script, some very memorable sequences, is well scored and Gene Hackman once again is superb in the lead. I like cop flicks just as much as the next person, and I have to say The French Connection is one of the best of them. Not only does it have all the things I mentioned above, but I think it has aged well and it is definitely worth seeing more than once. All in all, superb, worth seeing for Hackman. 10/10 Bethany Cox

While the 1960s brought us a slew of anti-heroes that even made their way to police films, predecessors such as BULLIT and MADIGAN are tame compared to this ground-breaking film. While these previous films gave a much bleaker view of police work and corruption, THE FRENCH CONNECTION was unique in the intensity of the sleaze that permeates the film. In most ways, this serves to heighten the realism, though even today some viewers will blanch at the films frequent use of the f-word and the general griminess of the city. Fortunately, in recent trips to the city, I was pleased to see how clean and safe the New York has become, but for the New York City office of tourism, this film must have been a nightmare!! Junkies, garbage, murders and the lowest elements frequent this interpretation of the Big Apple--making it look a bit worm-eaten and squishy! The lead of the film is Gene Hackman and his quiet partner is Roy Scheider. Hackman's character, in particular, made it hard to differentiate him from the criminals because he played fast and loose with some people's rights and because he was prone to getting drunk and picking up one night stands. This was definitely NOT the cop your daddy would have seen in films in the good old days and I am pretty sure Jack Webb didn't approve of this Popeye Doyle character!!!Despite the seaminess of the film, it was a great detective film because of its exceptional action sequences that made up for the very mundane nature of the job. Long periods of wire tapping and grunt work were punctuated with some of the most exciting scenes in film history--including what most experts would concede is the best chase scene on film. Additionally, the script and direction made the film quite exciting and gritty--thanks also to improvisations to spice up the cop lingo. In so many ways, this film helped create a new type of police film and led to movies such as SERPICO, THE BLUE KNIGHT and the DIRTY HARRY films. See this film and see where it all began--as this was the first rated-R cop film to win the Oscar for Best Picture and STILL today is a film you don't want to let your kids watch (unless you are an irresponsible idiot).

Daniel Ellsberg, a government consultant, gained access to some of the classified documents and leaked them to the New York Times in June of 1971. The reports revealed many large scale attacks that the U.S. public were not aware of, causing many U.S. citizens to lose trust in the United States government. The general feeling was that the United States government had misled the public and withheld the truth.

The Mariner 9 spacecraft became the first spacecraft to enter the orbit of another planet on November 14th of 1971. Mariner 9 had been launched on May 30th of 1971. It was successful in its missions which were becoming the first artificial satellite to orbit Mars, mapping the surface of Mars, gathering atmospheric data, and taking highly detailed images of the surface. The Mariner 9 craft was launched by NASA over a week after the USSR launched their Soviet Mars 2 spacecraft but made it to the planet much faster than the Soviet satellite. The Mariner 9 spacecraft stopped its communications in October of 1972 and is expected to remain in orbit around Mars for around 50 years before it will fall into the atmosphere of the red planet, Mars.
The nation of Qatar became independent from the United Kingdom during September of 1971. Located on the Arabian Peninsula, Qatar had been a British protectorate since 1916 and had also been ruled by the House of Thani since the early 19th century. Qatar had a simple transition to independence as under its previous agreement with the United Kingdom, the country had already had internal autonomy. The independence agreement removed all British influence and involvement and Qatar became a fully sovereign state ruled by the Al Thani family as a hereditary constitutional monarchy.

I tend to dig these out once a year, typically as the summer begins to burn off in August and play them throughout the length of September. If you have yet to check these out, you can dig into an informal PERRO history, here, and explore the tunes themselves via this working download link.

Having read Anthony Burgess's novel years ago and working my way through the amazingly creative, futuristic dialogue, I really looked forward to seeing the movie. It was not a disappointment. In the hands of Stanley Kubrick, it comes to life. It is the product of the desensitized world that we see unfolding before us in the beginning of the 21st century. There will be a lot of Alexes in the future; there already are. We are slowly moving away from conventional morality and playing with forms of nihilism. Our politics are beginning to diminish the individual rights and safety of our citizens. Our young people are beginning to band together in little covens, the cell phone and the computer creating little worlds where anonymity can lead to diminution of what is good. Pardon my diatribe, but what Alex and his droogs are doing isn't all that out of the ordinary these days. The manipulative, controlling, anything for "me" society is just being formed. Kubrick and Burgess had a a vision. Sometimes this movie is called science fiction. The only science fiction thing about it is that it takes place in the future. The violence we see is the violence of those who no longer care what that word means. This whole world is more frightening than the terrorists we see behind every rock. This enemy is us; or the us yet to be.
This classic controversial film from Stanley Kubrick is a love-it-or-hate-it movie which tends to divide audiences like the rest of the director's filmography. It's certainly a unique movie, perfectly made up to Kubrick's impeccable standards and with important messages for us all. Take for example the core "corrupt oppressive society" vibe that runs from 1984 to BRAZIL and you have the basis for A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, which tells of mind control being used on thugs and irredeemably evil prisoners. As well as this, Kubrick's movie looks at violence and its effects on both the purveyors and victims and proves to be a rewarding character study of an angry young man, as played by Malcolm McDowell (CALIGULA) in what can be called one of the defining performances of his career.Classical music has never been put to such good use as this in a film (aside from, perhaps, Kubrick's own 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY) and it fully complements the on screen action. Brutal street battles are played out in slow-motion as soothing tunes blast out on the soundtrack and the result is an effective depiction of the beauty of violence, if it can be called as such. Scenes showing Alex and his droogs going about their daily business of raping innocent women and beating innocent men are thoroughly horrific and very violent for the time, although of course the impact has been dulled by what has come since. However, the best parts of the film come during Alex's therapy, as he is forced to watch violent film after violent film in a dark cinema and gradually becomes sickened to the sight of violence and, indeed, sex. The aftermath keeps you guessing as to the eventual outcome, making for some very tense scenes when Alex finds himself in the home of a man he had previously crippled. The acting is of a high calibre, with many strong supporting performances to complement Malcolm McDowell's own shining example. Of particular note are Warren Clarke and the others playing Alex's scarily sadistic droogs; Patrick Magee (DEMENTIA 13) who has a field day as the mentally unstable victim; Adrienne Corri as a rape victim of the gang and the actors playing the various doctors and scientists. Sharp eyes may spot future Darth Vader Dave Prowse playing Magee's strongman bodyguard. My only complaint with the movie is that it has now become inevitably dated. The use of obscure language for the most simple of terms just seems a bit pretentious and unnecessary and defeats the air of realism the movie is trying to put across. However, seen with a fresh eye, A CLOCKWORK ORANGE is daring and intelligent cinema and a well-made film to boot, not exactly entertaining but certainly though-provoking and challenging. 2ff7e9595c
